This is the second AAB Crop Protection in Southern Britain conference to be held, with the aim of establishing this as a biennial event that alternates yearly with the long-established Crop Protection in Northern Britain conference, organised by the Association for Crop Protection in Northern Britain.
These are as ever challenging times for crop production in Britain. Growers and their agronomists are contending with a multitude of drivers that are placing conflicting demands and constraints on production systems. Volatility in crop prices and a strong incentive to maximise yield have to be addressed within the context of sometimes scarce and increasingly-expensive inputs, concerns over water quality, food safety and pesticide resistance, and uncertainty over the future approval of key active ingredients and the potential impacts of climate change.
To achieve success will require a combination of practical agronomic solutions, development of new options for cultural, chemical or biological control, and further breakthroughs in genetics, plant breeding and our understanding of the biology of our major weeds, pests and diseases. In this respect, it is vital that there are collective opportunities for discoveries and progress in all of these areas to be shared and discussed. Together the two Crop Protection conferences provide an ideal annual forum for this to take place.
